As the need and urge for education rises, Africa is becoming well known for an expansion of colleges and a growing number of youth enrolled in universities.
These days, competing with a Diploma or Degree – though a necessity for several employers – is becoming obsolete as the demand for an advanced education drives the African university student onto the Masters and Doctorate level.The quality of a university education obtained in Africa is also improving in step with a transition in the world’s education systems from merely acquiring academic knowledge to discovering relevant skill sets that best fit the global market.
These achievements should not shock anyone; after all, the earliest universities in human history were built right here in Africa. Of all the universities that exist in Africa today, here are 5 that are making history right now.
1. University of Cape Town: The oldest university in South Africa and the second oldest in modern Africa, the University of Cape Town (UCT) to date ranks as the highest-ranked African university in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, the Academic Ranking of World Universities and other international systems. Founded in 1829 as the South Africa College, the University of Cape Town is best revered for its Law and Commerce Faculties, which are regarded among the world’s finest. The university’s language of instruction is English.
2. Cairo University: This is Egypt’s first public university, previously known as the Egyptian University between 1908-1940. With its main campus located in Giza, the Cairo University is most remembered for its iconic geographic location across the Nile. Founded in December 1908, the University is Egypt’s second oldest after Al Azhar University. Cairo University has to its credit three Nobel Laureates as alumni as well as the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations, Boutros Boutros-Ghali. 4. University of Ibadan: This university is the oldest and most prestigious university in Nigeria. Located about 8 kilometres from the major city of Ibadan in Western Nigeria, the university runs over ten faculties including Technology, Law, Public Health and Dentistry and Social Sciences. Notable alumni and world-acclaimed personalities affiliated with the university include Things Fall Apart author Chinua Achebe and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.
5. University of Ghana: Ghana’s premier university is also the oldest and largest of all universities in Ghana. Founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, the University can now boast of over 50,000 students. Its curriculum emphasizes the social sciences, medicine, law, technology-based and vocational courses; most recently, postgraduate training exercises have been added. The University of Ghana is most adored for its influential list of alumni, including world-acclaimed investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, former BBC television news anchor Komla Dumor (of late), Vice-President of the International Criminal Court Akua Kuenyehia and even the sitting Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama.
