It is a fact that Chelsea have endured a miserable start to their Premier League title defence.

The champions have taken only 14 points from their first 13 games and it is clear there are plenty of things wrong at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho’s side face a battle to make the top four and secure Champions League football for next season.

But what is wrong? And why are the Blues playing so badly?

Didier Drogba, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, believes he has the answer.

The 37-year-old claims a dearth of leaders in the dressing room is a significant contributor to their misfortune and compared it to his time in West London.
‘During my time at Chelsea we had a lot of leaders in the team, not only last year but during the previous seasons as well,’ he said. ‘We had Frank Lampard, Petr Cech, John Terry, myself, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien, Andriy Shevchenko, Claude Makelele – big names, big players and big characters.

‘We could take responsibility for a result and change the situation in bad moments such as when there was a change of manager or when we had bad results.

‘Terry is still there but on your own it is very difficult, so other players have to come up with this mentality. But it is not something you are born with, you build it within you.’

It is clear that there are issues, and Drogba is correct in the fact that there is a lack of leadership within the squad.

However, there’s far more to it as Chelsea have sold off far too many assets with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kevin de Bruyne and Ryan Bertrand all leaving and not being adequately replaced.

It’s not a particularly helpful assessment from Drogba and we don’t really need the ‘in my day’ comments from former players – especially as he stood alongside many of the same bunch who won the title only last season.
