Gamalio Rungani (29), a second year student who was studying Bachelor of Science in Local Governance at Midlands State University (MSU) and son to Bikita-Zaka Senator Anna Rungani, who was on vacation died this week in a suspected hit and run accident.
The fatal accident happened in the early hours of Sunday near Gumunyu Primary School along Masvingo-Mutare highway at Nyika Growth Point. Identification of the deceased was almost impossible until a Police officer retrieved a sim card from a crashed cell phone and somebody called and wanted to speak to Rungani as soon as the officer inserted the card into his phone.
This is how he was identified. His mother later came and positively identified him. Masvingo Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna has confirmed the accident.
It is believed Gamalieo who was coming from a beer drink at a nearby Night Club was hit by a haulage truck as his face was crashed beyond recognition. It took almost an hour for passersby and the police to identify the deceased.
Sources said Gamalio was drinking with colleagues at High Town Night Club at the Growth Point and bade farewell as he was leaving for school in Gweru the next morning.
"We were drinking together when he told us that he was leaving for Gweru the following day. He also wanted to attend the morning mass at St Zacheo Catholic Church before he left only to be told that he had been crashed to death," said Venancio Nyangara.
Another friend, Taropafadzwa Masunda said; "we are deeply saddened by the death of one of our friends. We received the news with shock and we attended the scene as friends. It is so painful because he had his ambitions."
His mother could not be drawn into comment as she was still in a state of shock.
