Hollywood has had significant interactions with Kenya, some of which date back to the early 1930’s.

This can be evidenced by the significant number of top-selling Hollywood movies that were partly or wholly filmed in Kenya. These films have continued to put Kenya on the global map to this day by showcasing Kenya’s beautiful scenery.

The films have also survived as a marketing tool for the Kenyan tourism sector. What’s more, they make Kenyans, who are ardent fans of Hollywood movies, feel part of the global film and entertainment industry. Here are four famous Hollywood movies that were filmed in Kenya.

The First Grader (2011)
This biographical drama is based on a true story and was entirely filmed in the Kenyan Rift Valley region. The film is an inspirational story of an elderly Kenyan farmer who became a veteran freedom fighter in the colonial times and defied all odds to fulfill his desire for education. Kenyan actor Oliver Litondo is the main character in the film, playing as Kimani Maruge, the 84 year-old freedom fighter who went back to school with village children that are young enough to be his own grandchildren. Since its release in October 2011, The First Grader has been riding high at the box office with over $714,722 worth of sales.

The Constant Gardener (2005)
Filmed in Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest slums, the film is about a UK diplomat (Justin Quayle) in Kenya struggling to solve his wife’s murder. Quayle, played by Ralph Fiennes, loses his wife, played by Rachel Weisz, in unclear circumstances and he must do everything possible to find her murderers. Weisz’s character was an amnesty activist investigating a dangerous drug trial, which she hoped would expose malpractice by a multi-million dollar pharmaceutical company. The Constant Gardener is a top box office movie, having earned $82.5 million in receipts.
Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003)
The film is about a fearless explorer Lara Croft, played by Angelina Jolie, who is bent on finding Pandora’s Box before two ruthless criminals, Jonathan Reiss and Chen Lo, use it for wicked purposes. Although the movie was only partly filmed in Kenya, it made huge domestic sales: more than $65 million, according to Box Office.

Nowhere In Africa (2001)
This autobiographical drama is based on a German novel by Stefanie Zweig, which tells the story of a German couple that relocated to Kenya to escape the Nazis. Threatened by Hitler’s autocratic reign, a Jewish lawyer Walter Redlich, played by Merab Ninidze, moves with his wife Jettel, played by Juliane Kohler, and daughter Regina, played by Lea Kurka, to Kenya. The film highlights some of the difficulties that a typical alien family will go through in an attempt to settle in a foreign land. The film made a total of $6 million domestic sales.
