Handcuffs At The Workshop: Gift Amuli Arrested For Calling First Farai A ‘Thief’
H-Metro Update • February 19, 2026
The "Wamatuka" Irony. In a dramatic scene at the Zimbabwe College of Music, Sungura musician Gift “Case” Amuli was arrested yesterday while attending a ZIMURA workshop. The "Wamatuka" hitmaker—whose most famous song translates to "You Have Insulted"—is now in police custody for allegedly doing just that. He is facing cyberbullying charges after a relentless social media campaign accusing fellow musician First Farai of being a thief.
| End of the Chase: Police caught up with Amuli at a music workshop after he reportedly played "cat-and-mouse" with detectives. |
The arrest follows a formal complaint filed by First Farai, the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) vice-chairperson. Farai claims he was pushed to the limit after Amuli repeatedly took to online platforms to label him a criminal, resurrecting 15-year-old allegations regarding the late Cephas Mashakada’s funeral funds.
Cyberbullying Charge
National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed Amuli is being interviewed for cyberbullying, warning the public to find "amicable solutions" rather than online attacks.
Caught at the College
First Farai revealed that the police had been looking for Amuli for some time. "The police had been looking for him, but he was playing cat-and-mouse," Farai told H-Metro.
The chase ended on Wednesday at the Zimbabwe College of Music. Ironically, Amuli was arrested while attending a workshop organized by ZIMURA—the very organization at the heart of the conflict.
"I Consider Him a Brother"
Amuli allegedly used social media to question Farai’s integrity, accusing him of stealing condolence money intended for the late Cephas “Motomuzhinji” Mashakada in 2011.
Despite First Farai repeatedly refuting these claims (originally raised by Hosiah Chipanga), Amuli continued the attacks.
“To be honest, I don’t have bad blood against Amuli, and I consider him a brother,” Farai said. “But I reached a point where I realised that the attacks were too much... My family was also worried.”
Farai emphasized that he reported the case in his "personal capacity," not as a ZIMURA board member.
Boardroom Battles
The arrest occurs against a backdrop of severe internal conflict within ZIMURA. Tensions escalated following the sale of two association flats in Harare.
This animosity resulted in three board members—Joseph Gararakara, Gift Amuli, and Derreck Mpofu—being fired. The Ministry of Justice had to intervene to help resolve the matter.
Official Confirmation
Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest: “I can confirm the arrest of Gift Amuli over cyberbullying, specifically regarding Farai Batani. He is assisting the police with investigations.”
He urged the public to desist from using social media to settle scores: “People should not engage in cyberbullying when they have disagreements.”
