If you have been searching for methods to make money blogging, I’m pretty sure you would have stumbled across google adsense. Adsense is a method I’ve been using for over 5 years and accounts for a large proportion of the money I make online.

How To Make Money Online With Google Adsense
Adsense is a clever, simple system but making money from it can be a lot harder than you may think. This article is going to provide you with an in-depth insight into the advertising programme and how to profit from it.

Lets get started.

What is Adsense?
Adsense is a contextual advertising programme by google, that allows publishers to display ads on their site. By contextual I mean that google figures out what the content of your web page is about and serves adds relating to the subject.

For example if you have a web page that is on the topic of ‘How to find cheap auto insurance’ google will serve you adds offering auto insurance leaving a high chance of a visitor clicking on an add and highlighting why adsense is so effective.

Adsense is everywhere, you will have definitely seen it. The adds are displayed in text, picture or video format and say ‘ads by google’ to the side.

To make money online with adsense your website visitors need to click on an add, thats it. Google then charges the advertiser and gives you a 68% share of the revenue, not bad eh?
How To Get Approval & Start Making Money With Adsense

Getting accepted is a lot harder these days, than it was 5 years ago. Contrary to what you may have heard or read, there is no special adsense approval trick that will get you guaranteed acceptance and in super quick time. There are however some things you need to do before you should even think about heading over to google and filling out the form.

You will need a blog or website and a half decent one at that. By half decent I mean 6-12 well written, unique articles on a subject that doesn’t violate adsense’s TOS (more on that later) If you are using a self hosted blog with your own domain it should be 3-6 months old, the older the higher the chance of approval.

If you can’t wait 3-6 months, I would strongly suggest you use a blogging platform like HubPages or Blogger. Blogger is actually owned by google. Hint Hint! You will still need the 6-12 well written articles on the site, some pictures and youtube videos to compliment your written content, wouldn’t go a miss.

You should wait until your blog has been indexed by google, which should take 2-7 days and then submit your application.

Once You Get Accepted – Play By The Rules
I’ve read lots of horror stories on various forums of people getting their adsense accounts banned for no reason. In my opinion there is always a reason, and these people that are moaning and whining have most certainly not had their accounts taken away for nothing.

Google is very sensitive about the adsense programme and why wouldn’t they be? It brings in billions of dollars every year from advertisers and if those advertisers start feeling insecure or having doubts about the programme it could have a huge negative effect for the company.

The message here is simple, read up on the TOS, play by the rules and you will be fine.

Things To Avoid:
Click Fraud- Google is a smart cookie and clicking on your own ads or getting people to click on them for you, will be figured out.
Copyrighted material – Never use copyrighted material on any of your sites anyway, but using it on a site with adsense is a big no no.
Violations Of Content – Gambling, hate, cheating, hacking, pornography, guns & weapons, alcohol and tobacco are all subjects that violate the TOS.
Click Coercion – Placing ads so they are clicked on by mistake, or trying to fool your visitors into clicking them.
No Real Value – Thin, spun, badly written content on a site with google adsense can definitely get your account banned. With the recent updates, panda and penguin the majority of these sites have been wiped off the face of google earth.

If you have sites that have been legitimately affected by one of these updates, I highly recommend removing the ads. If your site is still ranking but falls into this category I would also recommend removing adsense and updating it with some decent content before putting the ads back on.

Its much easier if you build sites that add real value, rather than looking for the next big loophole to game the system.

If you haven’t already done so, I highly recommend you read:

How Much Money Can You Expect To Make With Adsense?
Have you heard the myth?
Wrong!
I have regularly seen $1, $2 & $5 clicks. People have reported $25 clicks, although I have unfortunately never experienced this myself.

Another myth about making money with adsense is:
Wrong again.
For a start micro niche sites which target one specific keyword are getting slapped by google harder than my mum ever slapped me as a kid (and I was a naughty child) so to build 200 of them would be suicide.

When I building sites for adsense I like to target specific niche’s:
Finance
Health Medicine
Real Estate
Legal
Education/training

Not only do these topics provide a high earnings per click (EPC) but there are thousands upon thousands of sub niches which present less competition but still large amounts of traffic.

You see, adsense is a numbers game, the more visitors you attract to your site, the higher percentage of those visitors click on an ad (CTR) and the more those ad clicks are worth, the more money you will make.

You will never know exactly how much a certain ad is worth until someone clicks on it, the more popular the keyword the more an advertiser is willing to pay resulting in more money in your pocket.

To find out if the niche you are contemplating is a high paying one you could use google’s free keyword tool.

Its important to note that this is a rough figure of the amount advertisers are bidding for the keyword and you will only receive 68% of this.

I’m based in the UK, so the figures above are in pound sterling. Maybe the gold niche is worth entering? Hint hint!
Adsense is not a get rich overnight scheme, it will take time and effort to build quality sites and build traffic to start making money online.

How To Place Adsense On Your Blog

You have 3 options:

Use a plugin
There are various wordpress plugins available. All you need to do is enter ‘adsense’ in the search plugins options in wordpress. I have personally used simple adsense on a few of my sites and have no complaints.

Adsense Ready Theme
If you had asked me about an adsense ready theme 18 months ago, I would have said they were an absolute must, these days I’m not to sure.

Adsense ready themes are naturally ugly, the CTR theme I used was anyway. It did however convert like crazy due to the ads occupying the majority if not all the space above the fold. When I say convert like crazy, I was getting a 20% CTR on some of my sites, which really is impressive.

I’ve been put off by these types of themes since the recent updates. For a start google has stated that websites displaying too many ads above the fold are likely to be penalized and lose or fail to achieve high rankings. Secondly, as mentioned the CTR theme I was using was very ugly, which can result in a high bounce rate.

Google is now using bounce rate as one of the many factors to position a web page in the SERPs, the higher the bounce rate the more negative the effect it may have on your rankings.

I have no evidence to suggest that these type of sites are no longer good to use, I am merely giving my opinion. Read more here
