Before he was a social media darling, Prosper Ngomashi aka Comic Pastor was a cattle herder. But after a series of his 2015 videos went viral on WhatsApp and Facebook, his fame was launched.

“I started doing skits when some mobile phones were recording quake videos,” Comic Pastor recalled. “I started filming myself with my mobile phone and sharing on social media. I became viral and suddenly now I am famous.”

The trendy comedian began acting at school and in his church. “It was when Mike Tyson fought with Evander Holyfield and I did skit titled Akuruma nzeve ndewako,” the comedian recalls.

During Easter, he performed at church gatherings but he called his exploits sermons, he told an online magazine. “Those days I never knew anything about stand-up comedy I just knew one form of comedy which I called sermons.”

An appearance at a comedy workshop transformed his acting life where he rubbed shoulders with established acts. But before he entered the comedian industry, he was a cattle herder in Botswana. “I was a herd boy between 2002 and 2003 in Mahalapye town, Botswana, and that is when I had tried to be a cross-border trader,” he said.

But rather complain about the herding days, he calls it an experience. “The feeling of being a herd boy was not as bad, it was an experience I never had since we could hardly visit our rural home in Dande, Guruve,” Comic Pastor said.

“But I felt like a useless person looking at the life of my former schoolmates going for advanced level and their lives looking flourishing. I started to have an inferiority complex,” he added.

Though he had in interest pursuing education, he failed to after failing school. “I had passed my ordinary level, but it was not easy to combine the five subjects which are prescribed,” the comedian told a daily publication.

“I could not go for advanced level and I feel also that was the time when O’ level was regarded as a qualification by our parents, so I was done with my education.”

Attempts to relocate to South Africa were thwarted when he was arrested attempting to cross the border illegally. “I got arrested in Louis Trichardt after successfully escaping all the other roadblocks and we got deported after four days,” he said, adding that an NGO rescued them.

Back home, he rose from being a security guard to a warehouse manager in seven years. “I started working as a security guard in a fabric shop until I got promoted to stores and warehouse manager. I was promoted again to sales manager before I left in 2017.”

With the advent of COVID-19, the Comic Pastor sees the opportunity to revamp himself. “This is the time to revamp yourself as an artiste. Social media presence is important if you are an artist because all those viewers and followers are money. You can never go broke if you have a good social media presence,” he said.

Though the pandemic has hit them hard, postponing some of their scheduled gigs, he admits YouTube has kept them going. “We got a few paying gigs on social media. The revenue that we got from our YouTube page has also proven to be very helpful,” said Comic Pastor.

With more than 92,000 subscribers on YouTube, Comic Pastor’s videos are trending on number one locally, attracting corporates sponsors for his skits and monthly Comic Awards.
