Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), the publisher of NewsDay, The Standard, and The Zimbabwe Independent has doubled the prices of its print newspapers.
AMH which is owned by publisher Trevor Ncube has blamed market speculation and product scarcity for this increase. In a notice, the company said:
We note with concern the recent developments that have fuelled market speculation, product scarcity and resulted in general cost increases. Unfortunately, we have not been spared from these market forces, and hence we have had to adjust the cover charge of each of our publications accordingly.
Zimbabwe Independent – $4 per copy.
The Standard – $2 per copy.
The above increases will not affect existing subscriptions. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to continuing delivering fair, accurate and objective news that builds and takes the nation of Zimbabwe forward.
The announcement was made before Vice President Kembo Mohadi announced that the government will revoke licences for businesses charging in foreign currency or increasing prices of products.
Update:
After publishing the article, Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Energy Mutodi warned media organisations to not engage in speculative behaviour and to maintain current prices.
