Boss Pochettino said: “It is true out supporters can dream. They are right to dream. It is important to share that moment with them. You could feel it was a real test for us.

“You can start to feel in a stadium like Man City’s against a big, big team you can win — and that is important.

“You need to try and improve every day and we are now in a good position.”

Striker Harry Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 2-1 win and said: “We are buzzing.

“But there is still so long left that we have to keep focused and keep doing the right things.

“We are confident we can beat anyone in the league. Whoever we come up against, we fancy our chances.”

Furious Manuel Pellegrini claimed ref Mark Clattenburg should not have been chosen to officiate after a controversial penalty cost his side.

The Etihad chief is still angry with two goals that were allowed to stand by Clattenburg when Tottenham won 4-1 at White Hart Lane in September.

And he was seething by the decision to award a spot-kick for an apparent handball by Raheem Sterling.

Pellegrini said: “I believe the penalty decided the game. It hits the back of Sterling and after that it hits his elbow very slightly.

“I don’t think the referee can decide the game in that way.

“It was a penalty that referee Mark Clattenburg wanted to sign for and he gave the sign. It was absolutely the wrong decision.

“I don’t think it is a good decision to have the same referee.

“I repeat, we are very unlucky with this referee. It was the same thing in the first game against the same team.”
