An irate Roy Keane says Manchester United are lacking leaders and "special players" following their Champions League group stage exit.

Louis van Gaal's side lost 3-2 to Wolfsburg in Germany , and coupled with PSV's victory over CSKA Moscow, meant Louis van Gaal's side failed to reach the last 16.

"It as a disaster for them, considering the goals they gave away," he said on ITV's Champions League highlight show.

"Man United have a lot good players, but I don't think they're good enough for Man United. They lack real quality.

"If you look at the recruitment they've thrown real money at it, but there's no special players at the moment. With Man United there's always one of two special players who produce

"They lack characters and leaders when you look at the goals they conceded."

Keane was quick to not to just point the finger of blame at Louis van Gaal, who has been heavily criticised by a section of United fans following the defeat in Germany.

"The manager's getting a lot of criticism, but it's about the players as well.

"With the goals they conceded last night from set pieces - forget about tactics or systems, it's just about doing your job.

"They're almost robotic. You talk about tactics and systems, but you need a bit of passion, desire. Show some character.

"Carrick's an experienced player, he should get a hold of his man and say 'we are not conceding'.

"There's technically good players, but no passion.

"I think managers get too much credit when things are going well and too much criticism when things aren't going so well. There's a lot of experienced players like Carrick, Schweinsteiger, De Gea and it's up to them to help the younger players.

"They've spent so much money it's untrue. Wayne's a loss, but injuries are part of the game.

The former Red Devils skipper was also frustrated by the club's lack of progress in Europe since David Moyes' ill-fated spell in charge.

"There's been an improvement in the league, but in Europe there's been no steps forward despite the money invested.

"It's not about throwing money at the club, at Man United you need certain certain characters and they seem to be lacking characters over anything else."

United will now be among the 32 teams in Monday's draw for the Europa League instead.

This came after Rio Ferdinand last night said that it was an "embarrassment" for Manchester United top drop into the Europa League.

Paul Scholes also chipped in following the Red Devils' exit.

“I think he’ll be under pressure now," said the former England midfielder. "It’s not a great situation. There was no urgency, threat or quality.

“They are an average team and with an average team you get average performances.

"They spend £250m and can't qualify from a shocking group. It is more of a disaster when you are surprised."
