The Reds saw the return to European footballs top competition end in misery after things looked to be heading the right way on the night.

Despite taking the lead early on, United threw away their advantage and despite a number of twists and turns in Eindhoven and Wolfsburg, Louis van Gaal's men ultimately came up short.

In the aftermath of the defeat fans took to social media to voice their anger at what has been a disappointing European adventure, the Manchester Evening News reports.

With disgruntled voices from United supporters growing in recent weeks, the latest result has seen the manager come under some real fire.

Here is a selection of the comments:

@ManUtdMEN The Dutch dummy now officially a bigger flop than Moyes. Moyes got us to Qtr finals on £27m spend, whilst van Gaal's spend of...— UnitedfanManc (@UnitedfanManc) December 8, 2015

Is it all that bad?

What we're watching is nowhere near good enough, and we're right to expect & demand more. But the league table should give some perspective.— Republik of Mancunia (@R_o_M) December 8, 2015

Time for change?

@ManUtdMEN Chelsea's former interim manager , Rafael Benitez won Europa League with them , surely we can take Mr Carlo Ancelotti soon.— Juan Pablo Faredo (@mofaridofficial) December 8, 2015

Europa League misery

Now into the dire Europa league or whatever it's called this week. Bet there will be a few #mufc fans looking to opt out of buying tickets.— Andrew Kilduff (@TuftyMUFC) December 8, 2015

Not thrilled about Europa league either - Thursday nights before weekend league matches. How will we be able to be mediocre enough in time?— Darren (@thedevilstweets) December 8, 2015

Rio unimpressed

As a @ManUtd player I was embarrassed going from the Champions league to the Europa league...we expected more of ourselves.— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) December 8, 2015

The number's up

@ManUtdMEN Moyes - £30m spent = Champs League Quarter Finals. LVG - £250m spent = Champs League Group Stage #LVGOUT— mike hylton (MUFC) (@MikeHylton7) December 8, 2015
