The death of her boyfriend Senzo Meyiwa shattered Kelly Khumalo. The Orlando Pirates keeper was gunned down in her presence at her family home in 2014.

“But there was never a point where that man would give up on me. Nothing was worth him giving up on me,” she testified.

Despite the falls, the musician has never let her past floor her faltering career. “I regret nothing, I believe that we are always where we are meant to be. I don’t think that I would be the woman that I am today if it was wasn’t for my experiences, good or bad.”

The Voice of Africa, her tenth album is ripping the charts apart. “Empini” was certified gold by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA), followed by “Esiphambaweni”, which also peaked number one in the gospel charts. At 38, Kelly is not getting younger, neither is she slowing down, yet.

Kelly became a celebrity 23 with her sizzling debut album T.K.O. she unleashed in 2005. With the album, the accolades came flowing through as she was named the Best Newcomer of 2005 in the Afro Pop music circuit. But a chain of bad decisions, not limited to drug abuse, soon doused her rise to full potential.

“All I’ve ever wanted was to sing. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to pursue, but the extras that come with being in the entertainment business are quite hefty,” she told the CapeTalk radio in February regarding her reality show, Life with Kelly Khumalo on Showmax.

Other disastrous relationships with men soon tracked her and resulted in messy breakups and emotional breakdowns. More of these revelations are detailed in the book The Kelly Khumalo Story authored by Melinda Ferguson.

In 2016, she opened up on her drug addiction to the Times, which was escalated by her boyfriend. “I became a drug addict. Those are the repercussions of having money when you young and not knowing what to do with it.”

“I was in a bad space. I was in a bad relationship. I was not motivated at all. In fact, I became so hooked on drugs and would forget about everything, she added, and the addiction ceased when her former boyfriend Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye was jailed in 2012.

“I wanted to be the next Whitney Houston, without the obviously the controversy. I was that child who always wanted to entertain. I always wanted the eye on me.”

Her wish list was however flooded with controversy and pitfalls.

“It’s the company you keep. When you're young, you want to be in with the cool kids and one thing leads to another. I am also a love addict and so when I am in love there is no telling how far I will go, to the point that the boyfriend was a druggie so it was easy for me to get into drugs to keep him with me,” she said.
