Chris Froome will be crowned as the winner of the 2016 Tour de France on Sunday after maintaining his lead during the 20th stage in the Alps.

The 31-year-old is to become the first ever British rider to win three titles in the famous race once the event comes to a close in Paris tomorrow.

Froome safely negotiated the rain-soaked penultimate stage to defend his overall lead and all-but seal victory, leaving him on the brink of some personal history.

Team Sky's Froome did well to survive the final descent into Morzine in the stormy weather, leaving him ahead of Romain Bardet by four minutes and five seconds which will almost certainly be enough to see him come out on top.

Stage 20 of the race was won by Spaniard Jon Izaguirre, who broke ahead of the pack to finish in a time of four hours, six minutes and 45 seconds.
