Jose Mourinho stands to earn a £15.25million bonus on top of his £10m-a-year salary if he can guide Manchester United to Champions League glory.
The 53-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Old Trafford club yesterday and was formally announced as the Red Devils’ new manager this morning. The former Chelsea boss has been out of work since December following his dismissal from Stamford Bridge and he spoke of his pride at taking the United job during his first interview this morning.
Louis van Gaal was one of the best paid managers in the world during his two years at the Theatre of Dreams, earning around £5m-a-year.
Mourinho, though, will earn exactly double that – an astonishing £10m-a-year.
However, the Portuguese boss has inserted a number of clauses into his three-year deal at the club and, according to Portuguese outlet Correio De Manha, he will earn an eye-watering bonus of £15.25m if he can win the club’s fourth European Cup.
The Red Devils will miss next season’s competition but Mourinho will be targeting the minimum of a top four finish to reinstate the club into Europe’s elite tournament for the 2017/2018 campaign.
