Dietmar Hamann has slammed Pep Guardiola for the way he announced his move from Bayern Munich to Manchester City.

Guardiola announced before Christmas that he would be leaving Germany and was later confirmed to be taking over as City boss at the start of next season.

The Spaniard dragged his heels over a contract extension at Bayern and Hamann, who once played for Bayern, has accused him of taking the Bavarians "for a ride".

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former City midfielder said: "Guardiola took Bayern for a ride in my opinion.

"The whole situation was not what you normally see at Bayern. I was surprised to see Bayern let this happen. I think Bayern lost a bit of respect for Guardiola, because he did not always show his cards. Bayern will have a different view than about six weeks ago.

"Bayern gave their coach more power than even before over the past two years, perhaps without even realising it themselves. It was almost considered blasphemy if you criticised Pep. He was regarded as a saint."

Hamann also believes that Guardiola's time at Bayern will not be considered as great unless he can secure Champions League success this season.

Bayern come head-to-head with Juventus in the last 16 later this month, who have won their last 12 games in all competitions.

Hamann continued: "I will not go as far as to say they backed the wrong horse, but the Champions League will be the ultimate test. If they crash out again like in the last two years, Pep's era at the club will have been good, but not great."
