But they claim he would be prepared to take a hands-on role behind the scenes as an advisor to Ryan Giggs if United chiefs think it's too early for the Welshman to go it alone.

Giggs has served as No2 to Van Gaal but despite being seen as the United boss in waiting, he has no managerial experience.

Ferguson is still involved at Old Trafford in an ambassadorial role.

But since helping David Moyes get the job to replace him, it's reported that he's effectively been excluded from helping making more big decisions.
Despite that, he has the support of the Glazer family who own the club and he's not entirely out the picture.

Van Gaal's job will hang by a thread if United lose to Liverpool today.

There's even suggestions he could be given the boot if his side fall to defeat at Anfield.
