World No. 1 Serena Williams’ mission for a historic calendar grand slam lives on, with the American declaring she’s “not done yet” after 21 grand slam wins.
Williams, 34, was on Wednesday toasted at a Manhattan event in honour of her Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year win.Serena Williams after winning the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year trophy. |
“It is, obviously,” Williams said.
“I’ve never done it, so we’ll see. I’m not putting any pressure on it.”
She said having won the French Open on “only” three previous occasions shows that completing the grand slam set in 2016 is “going to be a little difficult to do”.
Williams admitted she has got plenty of work to do ahead of next month’s Australian Open, having consumed more than usual over her break.
“I took a lot of time off ... I ate a lot,” she laughed at the event.
“I’m working off a lot of that food now. I’m 34, so my (injuries) aren’t perfect. I’m good though. Every day I’m sore in a new place, which is never fun.”
